About Kathy Tomena Gauthier of Connective Living

I was a teacher.

With a love of words and the meaning they hold, I chose to teach writing and literature at the Secondary and Community College levels.  I entered the working world wide-eyed, bright, and fresh out of grad school.  With degrees in hand and pure intentions in my heart, I jumped into a high school classroom, now as the leader.  I brought knowledge and the values associated with growing up in the Northeast, as the youngest of a Hungarian family bound by heartstrings.

I knew I was meant to positively impact the lives of my students, but I never imagined the lessons I was about to receive.  After all, I had already finished school.  I mean, I had my Master’s degree!  But, I quickly ascertained that the real learning—the tough instruction—begins when you start living outside of the four walls you grew up in.

While I loved teaching, life happened, as it does, and circumstances transported me from academic environments into Corporate America.  Motorola was my launching pad into the marketplace.  Holding leadership positions in Training and Development, Organizational Effectiveness, and Human Resources, while always working closely with business units, I was so fortunate to expand my background to include employment law and global leadership education.  Having worked directly on a comprehensive global leadership program, I connected my love of teaching and curriculum design with the corporate world.  Travelling throughout the U.S. and internationally, I developed, implemented, and actually taught key courses impacting Motorola’s leadership culture.

I had found my special place in the working world.

Later, I joined an international consulting firm, bringing my experience to General Motors.  I helped establish a financial shared services center from 0 to almost 500 employees.  From its inception, I had the privilege of leading the team responsible for shaping all aspects of the people infrastructure, systems, and overall culture of the organization.  This work directed my path to further consulting with companies as large as Bank of America to small start-up organizations.  I have consulted with numerous public and privately-held businesses of all sizes and in a variety of industries including, High Tech, Telecommunications, Manufacturing, Distribution, Banking, Retail, Health Care, Construction, Hospitality, Education, Financial Services, and Non-Profit.

Adding to my almost 25 years of professional credentials, more meaningful experience includes marriage, motherhood, heart-breaking loss, an unusual series of tumors and surgeries, and through it all, successful coping.  I have found that real life and leadership often occur through pain.  It is at those moments that I seek insight and opportunities to exchange life’s lessons with others.

I view the world with a metaphorical mindset, continually seeking significance beyond the surface.  Once I sort the pieces of life, I discern meaning and translate it into purpose that leads to action—action that matches me.

This approach has shaped how I endure difficulties and how I lead my living.

This approach is the inspiration behind my desire to evoke the intrinsic leader in people and organizations.

This approach is Connective Living.

And amidst all of this heavy, powerful leadership philosophy stuff, I like to have fun.  After all, we are here to live!

So with all the gifts my experience has brought me, even the ones wrapped in hardship, my understanding of life and leadership has been accelerated and clarified.  My leadership influence is soaring; I am prepared for now.  Right now.  And, I am ready to share all that I know with you.

I am a teacher.
